THE OLDEST GREEK INSCRIPTION IS FOUND IN ISCHIA.The Cup of Nestor is an extraordinary archaeological find, discovered on the island of Ischia (ancient Pithekoussai) and dated to around the 8th century BC. It is a ceramic drinking cup (a skyphos) originating from the Greek world, probably from Rhodes, and decorated with an inscription written in the Euboean alphabet.The most famous feature of the Cup of Nestor is its inscription, one of the earliest written records of the Greek language.It is engraved in three verses and refers to Nestor, the Achaean hero mentioned in Homer’s Iliad:“I am the delightful drinking cup of Nestor.”

Yes! In the bay of Cartaromana lies the ancient sunken Roman city of Aenaria. It was a Roman settlement dedicated to iron and lead processing. Today, you can visit it thanks to tours on glass-bottom boats or through guided snorkeling.

It is the symbol of the island. Although the first fortress dates back to 474 BC (built by Hiero I of Syracuse), its current appearance is thanks to Alfonso V of Aragon (1441). Since you will be in the Forio/Lacco Ameno area for La Mortella, the fastest and most scenic route to reach the summit of Mount Epomeo (787 meters) starts from the hamlet of Fontana.
The Classic Trail: From the main square in Fontana, a 30-to-40-minute climb through chestnut groves and ancient mule tracks carved into the green tuff will lead you to the Hermitage of San Nicola.
Post-Rain Tip: Green tuff can become very slippery. Make sure you wear shoes with excellent grip (Vibram soles or similar) to tackle the final stone steps before the summit.
